About Us
Since establishing the firm of Hughes & Coleman in 1985, co-founding partners J. Marshall Hughes and Lee Coleman have been dedicated to protecting the rights and interests of Kentucky and Tennessee nursing home abuse and neglect victims as well as the families who care deeply about their elderly loved ones. This area of practice is also known as elder law or elder abuse law.
The abuse and neglect of our country’s elderly population is a growing social problem.
- An estimated 1-2 million Americans aged 65 or older have been injured, exploited or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection, including nursing homes, reports the National Research Council Panel.
- A National Elder Abuse Incidence Study estimated that for every reported case of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation, about five more cases go unreported.
- According to a 2008 study from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one in every six nursing homes surveyed in 2007 was cited for either harming patients or exposing them to deficiencies that put their health or well being in immediate jeopardy.
The National Center on Elder Abuse lists these signs of abuse and neglect:
- Bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions and burns;
- Unexplained withdrawal from normal activities, sudden changes in alertness and unusual depression;
- Bedsores, unattended medical needs, poor hygiene and strange weight loss.
